SWLA Boy Scouts the First to Have Property on the Moon

This year marks the Calcasieu Area Council Boy Scouts of America 100th anniversary. The Lake Charles council, according to Scout Exec. Michael Beer, has been around longer than that. Troop 1 was started with the Mayo family in 1911. They were incorporated in 1920 and over the last few years have seen a significant increase in registration. The SWLA Troop has more than 2,000 members.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the kids have been restricted from participating in a lot of group gatherings. Beer told KPLC 7 they’ve taken their adventures to outer space thanks to some new friends aboard the International Space Station. The scouts got an opportunity to interview real live astronauts on the space station and, since then, have been on an incredible learning journey. Beer said there’s a reason why his boys built such a strong connection with the astronauts and that’s because most of them were scouts, too.

A few weeks ago, the SWLA scouts got something in the mail that will forever change the way they see the moon. The package was sent anonymously and read, “Congratulations you have an acre of property on the moon!”

Beer and his scouts were both shocked and surprised. They’re proud owners of the same property where Eagle Scout and Commander Neil Armstrong landed the Apollo 11 in 1969. The icing on the cake was when the young scouts learned Armstrong famously said, ”The eagle has landed!” because he was a Boy Scout, too.

What a way to celebrate a 100th anniversary. Congratulations!
