It's rodeo time in Houston, almost. Whether you’re actually a cowboy or just like to watch humans hang on with one hand to furious 2,000 lbs animals and see decent entertainment, the region’s biggest rodeo is back again.

It’s one of two things I like about this time of year, the rodeo and boat shows.

The Houston Rodeo was for years in my family an annual tradition and I’m talking about when it was in the Astrodome. Some of the great entertainment in those days were: Elvis Presley, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Kenny Rogers and the First Edition, Jimmy Dean and many others.

Two of my favorite events were always calf roping and bull riding, with an added extra of the ‘calf scramble’ where calves were set loose and a gang of about 20-25 youngsters chased after them with a short piece of rope to snag one of about 15 calves. Nope, not every kid got a prize in those days, and honestly I haven’t been to the rodeo in a while I don’t know if they still do the calf scramble but it was a fun event to watch.

This year’s entertainment lineup has been announced with some big and not so big stars and a couple of old favorites:

March 7: Aaron Watson
March 8: Old Dominion
March 9: Chris Stapleton
March 10: Alicia Keys
March 11: Alan Jackson
March 12: The Chainsmokers
March 13: Sam Hunt
March 14: Meghan Trainor
March 15: Thomas Rhett
March 16: Luke Bryan
