Louisiana FEMA Severe Storms, Tornadoes, and Flooding Assistance
The request for a Louisiana disaster declaration from FEMA to help flood and tornado victims has finally been approved. The FEMA 4606 federal assistance is for the recent flood and tornado damage that occurred last month here SWLA. The funding was approved on June 2 and will give relief to thousands of Louisianans severely affected by the substantial flooding and tornado damage during the storms in May.
The fastest way to apply for assistance is online at www.disasterassistance.gov. Victims can also call 800-621-3362 (TTY: 800-462-7585) for assistance between 8:00am and 10:00pm. For relay service such as a videophone, InnoCaption or CapTel should update FEMA with their specific number assigned to that service.
Applicants will need the following items readily available to register for assistance:
- Contact number where you can be reached immediately
- Address of damaged property and/or the address of your current location
- Social Security number (if available)
- List of damages and losses
- If insured, the policy number, the company, and the agent, if available
If you are a homeowner or have renters insurance, you are to file a claim immediately on your policy. If your damages or losses are not covered, you can apply for assistance. FEMA cannot duplicate benefits on damages or losses that all already covered.

Remember to keep all receipts and photos, and document all damages from beginning to end and begin cleanup. If possible, start repairs now to prevent further damage. U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest disaster loans are available for businesses of any size, including nonprofits, homeowners, and renters. Like FEMA, the SBA cannot duplicate benefits for losses already covered by insurance.
