When they arrived they observed the young child had severe "road rash" or scrapes and brush burns from the pavement, on his head and legs. The injuries were deemed serious enough that the child was airlifted to a Lafayette Hospital. According to a subsequent update on the Welsh Police Facebook page, the boy was in stable condition and is expected to recover.

Witnesses at the scene on Bowers Road say the driver of the white pickup swerved to avoid another vehicle in the roadway. It is believed the driver of the white pickup was unaware he had made contact with the small child who was reported to have been playing near the street between a U-haul truck and another vehicle.
