COVID-19 Cancels Last Popeyes Buffet In Louisiana
First, we get the heart breaking news that Popeyes is taking Cajun rice and green beans off their menu, now this.
A Popeyes location just up the road in Lafayette was holding on to the last buffet in the company before the pandemic. COVID-19 protocols are a lot more restrictive in Lafayette than they are here in Lake Charles, so the buffet has been closed down since the beginning of the pandemic, as well as inside foot traffic in the restaurant.
WAFB out of New Orleans reported that after the pandemic is over, management will not bring back the buffet. This is a shame. About a year ago, I packed up the family and we took a trip heading east on I-10 with the only intention of eating at the Popeyes buffet.
When we got to the restaurant, I hit the doors with a childlike joy and rounded the corner as if it was Christmas morning and I was rushing to the tree to see what gifts were left for me, but that joy was short lived. The buffet was empty and the lights were off. The life was sucked out of me and my knees grew weak. All I could do was sit down and wallow in my own self pity. After I gathered the strength, I asked an employee what was going on with the buffet, and they said it was only operational for lunch during the weekdays. We left dejected and made a beeline for KFC.
On the other hand, I had the opportunity to eat at a Popeyes and Pizza Hut combo buffet when I lived in Arkansas. It was an experience I'll never forget, and I'm sad I can't bring my kids to something so cool. Imagine this: on my plate was a huge chicken breast deep fried to perfection, a deep dish slice of meat lovers pizza, a glob of creamy mashed potatoes and gravy, a mound of Cajun rice, and a warm buttery biscuit on top of everything. It was a thing of beauty.
