Cajun Sweet Potato Pie Ingredients

For the filling:

2 cups mashed sweet potatoes (about 2–3 medium sweet potatoes)

½ cup unsalted butter, melted

1 cup dark brown sugar, packed

2 large eggs, beaten

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp Cajun seasoning (like Tony Chachere’s or homemade blend)

½ tsp ground cinnamon

½ tsp ground nutmeg

¼ tsp allspice

⅛ tsp cayenne pepper (for a subtle heat — optional but recommended)

1 tbsp dark rum or bourbon (optional but gives great depth)

Zest of 1 orange (adds a bright Southern touch)

For the crust:

Cajun Sweet Potato Pie Directions

1. Prepare the sweet potatoes

Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C).

Wash sweet potatoes, poke holes with a fork, and bake for 45–55 minutes until tender.

Let cool, then peel and mash until smooth.

2. Make the pie crust

In a bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar.

Cut in butter and shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add ice water a tablespoon at a time until dough just comes together.

Form into a disk, wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Roll out and place into a 9-inch pie dish. Trim and crimp edges.

3. Make the Cajun filling

In a large bowl, combine mashed sweet potatoes, melted butter, and both sugars.

Stir in eggs, evaporated milk, vanilla, and rum/bourbon (if using).

Add Cajun seasoning, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cayenne, and orange zest. Mix until smooth.

4. Assemble and bake

Pour filling into the prepared crust.

Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 50–60 minutes, until center is set and a knife inserted near the middle comes out mostly clean.

Let cool completely before slicing.

5. Optional Cajun toppings

Whipped cream with a dash of cayenne or cinnamon sugar

Candied pecans or bourbon caramel drizzle

A sprinkle of sea salt flakes on top before serving
