Even though the sleet and "snow" is gone, many roadways in SWLA are still covered with ice. LCPD, DOTD, and other emergency officials are strongly urging residents to stay off the road. Currently, LCPD reports Contraband Bayou Bridge, between Nelson and Lake, on W. Prien Lake Rd. is now open. There are several major interstates that remain closed due to ice on the roadway. Below is a list of interstates closed as of 10 a.m., Wednesday, January 17, 2018 courtesy of DOTD:

There are several accidents in the area and across the state directly related to black ice on overpasses and roadways. PLEASE respect the ice! Because of the icy road conditions, the City of Lake Charles announced that the Public Transit is not running. The city transit system will resume operation as soon as roads are safe for travel.

In addition, John Cardone, City Administrator, said that all non-essential Lake Charles administrative offices and services, including City Hall, will not open until 12 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018. KPLC 7 reports several banks and local businesses will follow suit and open at noon. There are also rescheduled city meetings, games, trash pick-up, and canceled events due to the weather in SWLA.

Mayor Nic Hunter said, "Safety of our employees and residents is of utmost concern. At this time, we don't want to risk their well-being, and so we're suspending services until we feel it is safe for them to travel on roadways."
