Update: Mitchell Hughes turned himself in Thursday, August 1, and was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center.


On July 22, a CPSO deputy was dispatched to Barbe High School in Lake Charles in regards to a burglary. Detectives reviewed surveillance footage from the school that showed several suspects breaking into the baseball concession stand and stealing an iPhone on Sunday, July 21, at about 5:00am. Afterward, the suspects entered the school and spray painted several of the walls inside. The suspects returned to the school again on Tuesday, July 23, and wrote on desks and destroyed a Promethean Board, causing over $6,000 worth of damage, said a media release from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office.

According to Kayla Vincent, after further investigation and releasing surveillance photos of the suspects to the public, detectives identified the suspects as Seth R. Bordelon, 18, Mamou, Thomas D. Berzas, 20, Elton, Mitchell M. Hughes, 21, and a 17-year-old juvenile.

On July 29, the juvenile was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Parish Juvenile Detention Center. Then, on July 30, Bordelon was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and released the same day on a $10,000 bond. On July 31, warrants were signed by Judge Davis for the arrest of Berzas ($13,000) and Hughes ($7,000).

The juvenile, Bordelon, and Berzas are charged with simple burglary, two counts of simple criminal damage to property $1,000 to $50,000, theft less than $1,000, and unauthorized entry into a place of business. Hughes wasn't responsible for the second incident at the school but is charged with simple burglary, simple criminal damage to property $1,000 to $50,000 and theft less than $1,000.
