Thanksgiving is about a week away and rising inflation will not affect Louisiana families and their Thanksgiving meal this year as prices for these food items have actually dropped. We found out how much more you'll be paying in 2023.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year. Great food, football games, and family...can it get any better than that?

I wrote an article in 2022 about how Louisiana residents would pay more for their Thanksgiving meal because of rising inflation. However, it looks like inflation won't be hurting us as badly this year when it comes to buying the turkey and all the trimmings.

The American Farm Bureau has released their annual Thanksgiving dinner survey

This year, the average smorgasbord of turkey and dressing with all the fixings will cost slightly more than $61 for a family of ten. For every guest, that's an average is $6.12. In actuality, the cost of the feast has decreased by 4.5% from 2022 when it reached all-time high costs. However, we're still paying 25% more than the dinner was in 2019 before the pandemic.

The American Farm Bureau sent out volunteer surveys to its members all over the United States and Puerto Rico. They reported on the prices of turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, dinner rolls, frozen peas, fresh cranberries, celery, carrots, pumpkin pie mix, pie shells, whipping cream, and whole milk.  This is what they used to come up with the $61.17 price tag for a Thanksgiving dinner in 2023.

Why were they looking at frozen peas? We want green bean casserole. And where are these people shopping, food banks?  We haven't even finished loading up our shopping cart on the Walmart app for curbside pickup and we're sitting at over $200.  And the worst part is we're not doing anything extravagant.

As you can see from above, it's your run-of-the-meal Thanksgiving fest.  I even went behind my wife and switched name-brand items for store brands. Right now, our total price is $230.15 to feed 5. Of course, we will have leftovers but, I have no idea how you can feed a family of 10 for $61, it just doesn't make sense to me.

The staff at 92.9 The Lake would like to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and hope that you have a joyous time with your family and friends. Eat some cranberry sauce for me.
