Voters in Calcasieu Parish have approved a sales tax to fund raises for school board employees. Educators have not had a pay raise since 2005 and it is hoped that the raise will attract more good teachers to the area.

While the figures won't be official until they are verified by the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office, the preliminary figures show that over 77% (12,485) of voters said, "yes" to the tax with only just over 22% (3,625) voting "no" on the proposition.

The new tax is expected to raise about $22 million per year to help fund those much needed raises.
