You've probably seen actor Steve Buscemi in movies and tv shows through the years, and thought what a goofball he is. My two favorite performances by him were in 1998's 'The Wedding Singer', and HBO's 'The Sopranos'. He seems like a good guy. But not many people know that he helped save hundreds of lives on September 11, 2001.

Buscemi worked as a New York City firefighter from 1980 - 1984 in Manhattan’s Engine Company 55, and on the morning of September 11, 2001, he went back to his roots and helped burrow through the rubble for survivors. Retired NYFD battalion chief Richard Ardisson, told People that Buscemi was really digging in, 'Not delivering coffee or giving moral support. He was exhausted and covered in soot.' He worked 12 hour shifts, wanted no recognition, and gave no interviews or photo ops. He said 'These are my brothers'.

His incredible story is below, told by his fellow firefighters on the Brotherhood of Fire Facebook page. God Bless you, Steve Buscemi, and all the others who made such a difference 18 years ago today.
