The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide. The annual event is the world's largest walk/run to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support, and research.

The goal of this walk is simple: the event is to raise money to "change the level of Alzheimer's awareness in the community." I do have a few friends who are currently dealing with parents who are in the early stages of Alzheimer's, and just seeing what they go through is humbling.

Alzheimer's is not content to ravage the body and mind of its victims; it takes whole families with it. I will never forget my friend, Murray, who became an Alzheimer's patient late in his life.  I can't tell you how sad it was that this man who had known me since I was born did not have any idea who I was. I can't imagine dealing with a parent in the same condition.

The Alzheimer's walk is this Saturday at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Registration begins at 9 a.m., the ceremony kicks off at 9:45 a.m., and the walk will begin at 10 a.m.

In case you're curious, the walk is about two miles, and it is all around the civic center grounds.
