(KHLA - Lake Charles, Louisiana) - The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) has confirmed the first case of the West Nile Virus in Louisiana for 2025.

Around 1 in 150 will experience a severe illness if infected with West Nile Virus. The illness can affect the nerves, spinal cord, brain, and in some cases case paralysis or death.

West Nile was first detected in Louisiana in 2002. It has spread to 14 parishes and has resulted in three deaths in 2024.

The first case of 2025 in Louisiana was verified in a Livingston Parish resident who was admitted to the hospital as a result of infection-related difficulties.
