The FDA has announced that the recall of fresh cut fruit sold at Walmart has been expanded.  KATC is reporting that Country Fresh is expanding its voluntary recall of various containers marked “Freshness Guaranteed “cut and/or sliced apples, grapes, mangos, pineapples and cantaloupe sold at Walmart.

During a recent inspection, the FDA found Listeria monocytogenes on and around packing machinery.  This prompted the company to call for the original recall on October 2nd.  After further review, the company has decided to extend that recall.  The recalled products were sent to Walmart distribution centers and stores in 8 states, including Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas.

According to the FDA, healthy individuals who consume fruit tainted with the bacteria could suffer short-term symptoms - but warn that it could cause "high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women."

These packages of fresh cut fruit will have a “best if used by” dates between October 3rd and October 11th of this year.  To see the full details of the expanded recall, read the official report from the FDA here.
