Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter took to social media to support the moving of the Confederate monument in front of the old courthouse in Lake Charles.

The South's Defenders Memorial Monument was first placed on the grounds of the Calcasieu Parish Courthouse in 1915. The monument represents the Confederate soldiers of the Civil War from the parishes of Calcasieu, Cameron, Allen, Jefferson Davis, and Beauregard. The five parishes made up the Old Imperial Calcasieu.

Mayor Hunter said that he doesn't believe the monument has a place in front of the courthouse anymore. However, he supports moving the statue to another location in Lake Charles. His post has sparked a firestorm of comments from both sides of the political spectrum here in SWLA.

Even though he gave his thoughts on the matter, the official and final decision is left to the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury.
