September is the perfect time to give blood because it marks Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month, around the nation for people to learn more about this illness and raise funds to find a cure. Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that causes red blood cells to change into a sickle shape. Because of the contortion, the blood cells don't move through the body too well and die prematurely. This causes a shortage of healthy red blood cells and this condition is called Sickle Cell Anemia.

Sickle-shaped red blood cells can block blood flow causing extreme pain. Other symptoms include infection and fatigue in persons with the disease. Thankfully there are some treatments via medications, bone marrow transplants(which are rare), and blood transfusions. This is just one of the many reasons why giving blood is so important.

Lifeshare Blood Center Lake Charles wants to make sure they have an ample supply of blood for all residents in the community including those suffering from Sickle Cell. Blood donations are essential in our community. The life-saving donation helps cancer treatments, victims of car accidents, persons with chronic illnesses, various surgeries, and a host of other medical reasons.

Please join the Lifeshare Blood Center and the American Legion for the "Get In The Game" Blood Drive on Sunday, September 11, 2022. See the flyer below for more details about the event.
