REO Speedwagon was formed in Champaign, Illinois in 1967. The band started as a college cover band while the members attended the University of Illinois.  They named the band REO Speedwagon, after the REO Speed Wagon, a 1915 truck that was designed by Ransom Eli Olds. Doughty had seen the name written across the blackboard when he walked into his History of Transportation class on the first day they had decided to look for a name. After they finished college, the band started to tour regionally in the Midwest. REO gained a huge fan base and because of their fans requesting their songs nonstop, they began to be played on a few influential radio stations. This got the attention of Epic Records and they inked a deal with the band in 1971.
