Once again, drunk driving has claimed a life in Calcasieu Parish. The overnight crash resulted in the death of a passenger who was not wearing any restraint. The driver in the crash was arrested on the scene for drunk driving.

The fatal crash happened shortly after midnight last night when a 2010 Dodge Caravan driven by 34-year-old Randall Keith Laird II of Lake Charles lost control of his vehicle on LA 3256 and failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. the vehicle went through two ditches then struck a tree.

The passenger in Laird's vehicle, 44 year-old Molly Frank of Iowa, was ejected from the vehicle when the car struck the tree and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say that Frank was unrestrained while Laird, who received only minor injuries was wearing his seat belt.

Following the crash,  Laird was given a standardized field sobriety tests, performed poorly,  and was charged with DWI and vehicular homicide.

Troop D has investigated 7 fatal crashes resulting in 7 deaths this year. Please remember to always wear your seat belt. Police say that, if Frank had been wearing her seat belt she probably would have survived this terrible crash.
