‘The Lion King’ First Reviews Call It a Landmark in Visual Effects
Critics saw the new version of The Lion King last night and their first reviews from social media are up online. By and large the reaction was very positive, with almost uniform praise of the movie’s computer-generated visuals. People were throwing around words like “landmark” and “breathtaking” and “the most beautiful effects movie” ever.
They were mostly in agreement on the rest of the film, with a lot of compliments for the next-gen Timon and Pumbaa voiced by Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen, respectively. Where there were criticisms they were mostly around the fact that the film is yet another extremely faithful Disney remake (maybe not live-action in this case, but live-action-ish) that doesn’t really do much to justify its existence, or feel much different from the original. And as beautiful as those lions and meerkats are, apparently, sometimes it’s a little “distracting” watching them sing and talk. (And emote too.)
Here’s a sample of the early reviews of The Lion King; our own review will be up shortly.
The Lion King opens in theaters on July 19.
