What the Forecast Shows

CSU's predictions indicate that 17 named storms could develop in the Atlantic this year. Out of these, nine are likely to strengthen into hurricanes, and four could reach major hurricane status, meaning they would be classified as Category 3 or higher with winds of at least 111 mph. Major hurricanes pose a serious risk, bringing destructive winds, heavy rain, and dangerous storm surges.

Texas at Higher Risk

The likelihood of a major hurricane making landfall somewhere along the U.S. coastline is estimated at 51%, which is above the historical average of 43%.

The Gulf Coast, including Texas, faces a 33% chance of a major hurricane coming ashore this season, higher than the usual 27%. This means Texas residents have a greater chance of experiencing a powerful storm compared to previous years.

The Role of the Caribbean

Many hurricanes begin forming in the Caribbean before moving toward the U.S. coast. This year, there is a 56% probability that at least one major hurricane will pass through the region, exceeding the historical average of 47%. Storms developing in the Caribbean often intensify before reaching the Gulf, making them a significant threat to Texas.

Preparing for the Storm Season

With the potential for a busy hurricane season, Texas residents should take precautions now. Here’s how to get ready:

  • Have an evacuation plan: Know where to go if an evacuation is ordered and plan your route in advance.
  • Stock up on essentials: Keep an emergency supply of food, water, medicine, flashlights, and batteries.
  • Secure your home: Check for any necessary repairs and ensure your property is protected against strong winds and flooding.
  • Stay informed: Keep track of weather alerts and follow local authorities' recommendations.

While hurricanes are nothing new for Texas, this season could bring more intense storms than usual. Taking steps to prepare now can help protect lives and property when a storm approaches.
