Memorial Day Weekend, in addition to its very solemn reasons, is often observed as the unofficial start to Summer. Here in South Louisiana, it has felt like Summer for about a month but this weekend, with temperatures expected to be in the middle 90's, there will be no doubt.

Before you shimmy off your cutoffs and head for the creek or the bayou or the beach keep this in mind. The area has seen a lot of rainfall over the past several weeks and many bodies of water in the are at a much higher level than normal. This is giving local authorities reason for concern with so many swimmers and boaters expected to be on the water this weekend.

Exacerbating the high water situation around the region has been a rather strong and consistent breeze. This southerly wind has been responsible for some coastal flooding along Louisiana's shore and authorities say the wind can also cause strong currents in the water.

The high water has closed many public boat landings and launches, especially along the Calcasieu River, Sabine River, and English Bayou. Local officials are suggesting that if the boat launches are closed, it's probably not a good idea for swimmers to go in the water either.

As always, a lot of common sense goes into keeping you and your loved ones safe around the water. We hope you'll include a lot of that common sense in your Memorial Day Weekend plans while you enjoy Louisiana's waterways safely.
