Whether it's someone calling claiming you won some money or a chain email giving you false hope of riches, it seems like ever other week there is someone attempting to scam someone else out of their money.

Sheriff Tony Mancuso is warning residents of a new scam that has recently surfaced in the area. Victims have reported receiving a phone call stating a warrant has been issued for their arrest for failure to appear for jury duty or other civic duties.

The caller identifies themselves as being employed with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office and they actually use a current deputy's name. Victims are then being told to purchase a prepaid card to void their arrest.

In most cases, if a warrant is being issued, you would be served in person. There are instances where you may be called. However, you will never be asked for money or any payment. Be on the lookout and for sure check on your grandparents and elderly, who sometimes are more vulnerable than others.
