For over 200 years, the U.S. penny has been a part of our everyday money. But now, there is talk about getting rid of it. President Donald Trump has brought the idea of getting rid of the penny into conversation.

Some people think the penny is no longer useful, while others believe it is still important.

Why Get Rid of the Penny?

Many experts argue that pennies are a waste of money. It actually costs more than one cent to make a single penny! The U.S. Mint, which produces coins, spends almost 3.7 cents to create just one. That means the government is losing money every time a penny is made.

Also, pennies take up space and slow down cash transactions. Think about how often people throw them in jars or leave them on the ground because they seem almost worthless. Some businesses have even stopped accepting pennies altogether.

What Does Trump Think About Getting Rid Of Pennies?

President Donald Trump has instructed the Treasury Department to stop minting pennies.

Trump posted this on Truth Social:

For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful! I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies.

 Will the Penny Really Disappear?

Getting rid of the penny would require a change in the law, and some Americans still like using them. Countries like Canada and Australia have already removed their lowest-value coins, and many believe the U.S. could be next.

For now, the penny is still here. But as more people move to digital payments and inflation makes small coins less useful, the idea of saying goodbye to the penny might become more popular.
