New Phone Scam Asks ‘Can You Hear Me?’
According to police departments all over the country, people have been receiving calls from telemarketers and automated systems asking "Can you hear me?"
Responding to the question with a "Yes" seems innocent enough, but in reality it means that scammers now have a recording of you saying "yes". Then they are taking these recordings and putting them into other conversations. For example, if a scammer got a hold of your credit card number they can play back your "yes" when the credit card company calls to confirm the purchase.
Consumerist suggests that you never say "yes" to a telemarketer in any situation. But if you do find yourself getting asked "Can you hear me?" respond with "I can hear you" or just hang up the phone.
