New Orleans Has Highest Murder Rate Increase in the Country
Once known as the "Murder Capital" of the U.S., New Orleans is unfortunately on its way to reclaiming that title as a new report claims the city has the highest murder rate increase in the U.S.
New Orleans Murder Rate
Wallethub.com has recently released a new report ranking rising homicide rate increases among the 50 biggest cities in the U.S. and New Orleans takes the number one spot.
The study "ranks New Orleans' homicide rate of 14.06 cases per 100,000 residents as the worst in the nation" according to wallethub.com.
That's right...New Orleans' increase in homicides for the 2nd quarter of 2022 is the worst in the United States.
By July 31, 2022, New Orleans Police reported 161 murders compared to 119 murders by July 31, 2021, according to justthenews.com.
In addition to having the highest rising murder rate in the U.S., New Orleans still only ranks third when it comes to homicides per capita.
The Top 5 list of homicides per capita are -
1. Baltimore, MD
2. St. Louis, MO
3. New Orleans, LA
4. Detroit, MI
5. Kansas City, MO
Believe it or not, there seems to be some good news.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson tells justthenews.com -
"Through this morning, we have had 14 homicides this month, compared to 23 all of July last year. We are starting to see the trend downward just a little bit. Let's celebrate that success while we have it and build on that momentum."
