Twenty four years ago, Ricky Williams shocked the NFL world when he set up a largely performance-based contract.  The most highly sought after draft pick set up a seven year, $11 million dollar contract with the New Orleans Saints that was largely incentive-based.  Although he did receive an $8.84 million dollar signing bonus.

That was also the year the Saints traded away every one of their draft picks in the 1999 NFL Draft to obtain Williams, making it the first time an NFL team only selected only one player in an entire draft.

Joe Burrow seems to have gone another direction.  Most young players will, understandably, try to maximize their contracts to get the most money possible.  But Burrow doesn't seem to be too worried about the money end.  According to his teammate Ja'Marr Chase, Burrow would rather structure his deal to be able to keep good players around him.

In a recent interview with the NFL Network, Burrow's Bengals and LSU teammate, WR Ja'Marr Chase said:

“At the end of the day, I don’t think Joe’s really too worried about how much money he’s gonna make, cause he’s already making a tremendous amount,” Chase said. “It’ll always work. It’ll work out for itself. It’ll all work out. I think Joe knows what he wants and how he wants to set up his contract to keep some of his weapons around him and I think that’s the biggest part for him.”
