A strange and vaguely familiar character was introduced during last night’s episode of ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.’ The talk-show host married the looks of Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow and early-70s David Bowie into one, glamorous yet reverent character called “Tebowie.”

Singing a reworked version of Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity,’ Fallon held a conversation between Tebow and Jesus. “This is Jesus Christ to Tim Tebow, please leave me alone / Don’t you know my day of rest is Sunday / And I’m sick of watching all these Broncos games,” he sings to the tune of the familiar chorus.

The outfit was as spectacular as the lyrics. Early shots show Tebowie in gold, glittered platform boots. He’s wearing a Denver Broncos jersey beneath a set of shoulder pads too dazzling for the Lingerie Football League.

I hear that you play New England next week / Dude you’re on your own / Brady is too good and I’ve got better things to do.

The Ziggy Stardust makeup and haircut complete the look for Fallon, but the whole thing wouldn’t work if he wasn’t such a capable impersonator. As one expects, the skit finishes with Tebowie crouching to a knee and putting a fist to his forehead, as the quarterback as done on so many occasions.

(Editor’s note: oddly enough, we’ve seen Bowie and the Broncos, or at least their respective fans, interact before. October 16, 1995: Bowie plays a concert with Nine Inch Nails at McNichols Arena in Denver at the exact same time the Broncos beat up the Raiders across the street at Mile High Stadium. Both events got done at about the same time, and the mix of face-painted football fans and heavily glammed-up Bowie disciples on the buses home, each snickering at how ridiculous the other looked, is something we’ll never forget.)
