(KMDL-FM) The status of a $2,000 Tariff Dividend check, mentioned by President Trump in a social media post a week or so ago, remains unclear. New information is being discussed. But if you're looking for definitive details on when or if the checks will be arriving in your mailbox or direct deposit to your banking account, we can't offer that to you right now.

What we can offer is the latest information on the political wrangling that we will have to go through to see those checks come to fruition for American families. Let's face it, with inflation affecting all of us, an additional $2,000 would be a great benefit for most Americans.

How Will The Tariff Dividend Checks Be Funded?

According to the Trump Administration, the money that will be used to fund the Tariff Dividend checks will come from the tariffs collected by the United States on imports. The President enacted several tariffs and raised others earlier this year as part of a plan to help satisfy the nation's deficit.

According to the Administration, those tariffs have raised approximately $195 billion for America's coffers. That's the good news. According to those who know math a lot better than I do, the President's Tariff Dividend program would cost well over $200 billion.

To add even more uncertainty to the potential Tariff Dividend Checks, there is now a case being heard by the Supreme Court over the tariffs. Should the Supreme Court rule against the Administration, it could cost upwards of $3 trillion to satisfy refunds and lost investments.

President Says This Is When Tariff Dividend Checks Will Go Out to Americans

The biggest news regarding the Tariff Dividend came from President Trump yesterday. The President, who had been very noncommittal on when tariff checks might be issued, actually offered a generalized timeline.

The President said the government would begin paying out $2,000 Tariff Dividend checks by mid-2026. Call it a coincidence, but based on that timetable, the checks would be hitting Americans' bank accounts just as voters are going to the polls for the 2026 Mid-Term Election.

What Still Has to Happen Before Tariff Dividend Checks Can Be Distributed?

There are still plenty of things that have to happen before this money arrives in your hands. First, the Administration is going to have to qualify and quantify who exactly is eligible. The cost of the program might mean it won't be as widely distributed as the COVID Stimulus checks were.

There is also approval by Congress that must be obtained. So we'll have to go through some grandstanding and political speak, but the chance to put money in voters' hands just before they go vote? That's pretty tempting for politicians, don't you think?

So, what have we learned about the Tariff Dividend Checks? If the Supreme Court doesn't quash the tariff idea, then we could see those checks by mid-2026, just as the Mid-Term Elections are about to be held. See, I told you there wasn't a lot of new information, but we'll keep digging to find out the latest, so do check back with us.

In the meantime, if you need some ideas for what you could do with some extra money, here are some from the last time we got a government check.
