(KMDL-FM) The mission of the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service is to make sure that food that is presented for human consumption meets certain quality and health standards. When a product does not meet those standards or has not undergone an FSIS inspection, that product is pulled from the market until the specified violations have been rectified.

Such is the case this morning with a major seafood and poultry distributor here in the Gulf South. The principals of that establishment have notified the FSIS of their intent to recall some 98,916 pounds of catfish fillet products that were sold in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

The issue with the more than 40 tons of catfish is that the products were released to the market without the benefit of federal inspection. Quality Poultry and Seafood of  Biloxi, Mississippi, notified the Food Safety Inspection Service that they were producing catfish products. The FSIS, through its records, determined that the products were not being inspected, which is why a recall was necessary.

When Were The Recalled Products Available to Consumers?

As of now, none of the recalled products, which were produced between September 2, 2024, and September 5, 2025, have been associated with any adverse reactions or illness.

We should note that, as you mentioned, the length of time the uninspected products were allowed on the market was from September 2024 through September 2025. This means there is a good possibility that some consumers might have portions of the recalled product in a freezer where it was stored for later use.

If you'd like to see pictures of the product labels, you may see those here. But there are several varieties of products involved in this recall. Here are the specifics as noted by the FSIS report online.
