Louisiana Beachgoers Should Avoid Shaving at Beach
(KTDY) - With summertime in full swing, many of us are planning to visit the beach in the weeks ahead, and there's one thing you should avoid doing prior to hitting the beach and getting into the water.
Sure, you protect your skin before leaving the hotel, house, or condo, as too much sun is never a good thing, and a severe sunburn can ruin your trip.
There's also something else that can ruin your day at the beach, and it's not the pigeons, seagulls, or person smoking next to you. Nope, it's none of those.
What Can Ruin A Beach Trip
I recently returned from the beach, and on one of the first days there, I decided to shave my face for the day, and oh what a mistake it was.
No, I didn't cut myself while grooming that morning, but what I felt after getting into the Gulf felt like I had several small cuts all across my neck.
I did not take into account that after shaving, the salt water in the Gulf would "sting" my face and neck, and for the first several hours out at the beach, it was no fun. Each time water brushed up the area II ishaevd, it burned, and it was not nice.
Sure, many of you may already know that sensitive skin and salt water don't mix, but I'm sharing this to remind you that if you are going to the beach, you should probably shave the night before.
Why Does Salt Water Sting
According to Dr. Oracle, the razor you use to shave your body creates small abrasions on your skin, your protective layer, and high concentrations of sodium can irritate the nerve endings on your body.
Shaving 24 hours before entering saltwater allows your skin to recover from minor abrasions and close microtears.

By applying petroleum jelly or a heavy barrier cream after shaving, you could prevent the salt water from burning the area(s) where you've recently shaved.
Again, this is just a reminder, as I don't want you or anyone in your family to go through the discomfort I did one morning, when the water was gorgeous out in the Gulf.
