In 1980, the NFL Draft took its largest step forward into the country’s collective consciousness when it was televised live. Commissioner Pete Rozelle believed that ESPN, a new all-sports cable network, could air the event, but he doubted it would attract spectators.

The NFL Draft did have a viewership. Every year the event has expanded, and the draft has gone from a hotel conference room to the big stage at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. In 2010, the draft expanded to a three-day schedule, and in 2015 it moved from New York City.

The first round of the 2024 NFL Draft takes place on April 25. Rounds 2-3 take place on April 26, with Rounds 4–7  on April 27.
