McNeese Extends Softball Coach James Landreneau
Lake Charles, Louisiana (KNGT-FM) - McNeese Softball coach James Landreneau is getting a well-deserved contract extension, the school announced on Wednesday.
The extension rewards Landreneau for building one of the top softball programs in the Southland Conference.
“Coach Landreneau has built a championship program that graduates engaged alumni every single year,” Schroyer said in a release from McNeese Athletics. “That’s why I’m so excited to re-sign him with this long-term extension. I’m looking forward to his team’s continued success.”
Landreneau's Continued Success at McNeese
Landreneau is a four-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year and was named Louisiana Coach of the Year in 2022. His teams have posted six 40-win seasons, including a school-record 47 wins in 2023. The Cowgirls also reached the NCAA Regional championship game in both 2022 and 2023.
James Landreneau is in his 14th year with the McNeese softball program and his 10th year as head coach. He is the winningest coach in program history. As of the end of the 2025 season, he owns a career record of 339 wins and 181 losses. In Southland Conference play, his teams have gone 163-41, which is one of the best marks in league history.
“McNeese State University is a special place, and I’m honored to continue to lead this program,” Landreneau said in a release from McNeese Athletics. “This extension allows me to keep serving a community that I love and a university that has been great to me and my family.”

McNeese Softball Coach James Landreneau Receives Contract Extension
According to the release from McNeese Athletics, the extension for James Landreneau is for four years with an option for a fifth year.
Landreneau will also lead the Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators following the 2026 softball season to coach his son.
