Officials with Fred's Super Dollar Stores have announced the closing of 159 of the chain's locations across the country. Among the 159 stores earmarked for shutdown are four stores here in Acadiana. The stores that have been designated to close have been found to be unprofitable or underperforming for the company.

Fourteen stores in Louisiana have been determined to meet the company's criteria for shut down. Most of these stores will be closing their doors by the end of May. Among the stores on the list are:

  • 2490 W CONGRESS ST, LAFAYETTE LA 70506
  • 806 VETERANS DR, CARENCRO LA 70520
  • 1801 WEST MAIN STREET, FRANKLIN LA 70538
  • 1114 SOUTH MAIN STREET, ST. MARTINVILLE LA 70582

. Here's what the company's CEO, Joseph Anto had to say about the planned shuttering of stores.

After a careful review, we have made the decision to rationalize our footprint by closing underperforming stores, with a particular focus on locations with shorter duration leases. Most of these stores have near term lease expirations and limited remaining lease obligations. Decisions that impact our associates in this way are difficult, but the steps we are announcing are necessary. We will make every effort to transition impacted associates to other stores where possible

Those remarks were chronicled in a report posted on KATC.com.
