City Council Votes: The Monument Stays
The controversy over the "South's Defenders" monument has been decided, at least for now. Following the court decisions about the confederate flags, a movement got underway in the area to discuss removing the "South's Defenders" monument from in front of the courthouse.
This is not the first time the statue has come under fire. Over the years there have been sporadic movements to have the statue removed labeling it 'racist' or at the very least glorifying those who fought for slavery in the Civil War.
At last night's meeting, the council voted 4-2 against a resolution requesting the Calcasieu Police Jury remove the monument at its Wednesday meeting.
We posted a poll about this issue earlier this week and the response, so far, has been pretty evenly split between having the monument removed or leaving it alone. We will post the results of that poll tomorrow
