A company is voluntarily recalling 1,700 pounds of salted butter after it was found to have high concentrations of coliform bacteria, a sign of possible fecal contamination, in the product.

If you’ve eaten food contaminated with coliform bacteria, especially the more harmful types like E. coli (especially E. coli O157:H7), symptoms can vary from mild to severe. Here's what to look out for:

Common Symptoms (Within A Few Hours To A Few Days):

  • Abdominal cramps

  • Diarrhea (can be watery or bloody, especially with E. coli O157:H7)

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Gas and bloating

  • Loss of appetite

  • Mild fever

More Severe Symptoms (Especially In Children, Elderly, Or Immunocompromised):

  • Bloody diarrhea

  • High fever

  • Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, dizziness, reduced urination)

  • Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) – a rare but serious complication from certain E. coli strains that can cause kidney failure

Timing:

  • Symptoms can appear anywhere from 6 hours to 5 days after consuming contaminated food or water.

When To Seek Medical Help:

  • Bloody stool

  • High fever (over 101.5°F or 38.6°C)

  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea (lasting more than 3 days)

  • Signs of dehydration

  • Very young children or elderly experiencing symptoms

Cabot Creamery 8-ounce Extra Creamy Premium Sea Salted Butter has been recalled in seven states:

  • Vermont
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Maine
  • Connecticut
  • New Hampshire
  • Arkansas

The products will have a best by date of September 9, 2025.

At this time, the company is claiming they only shipped the affected butter to the seven states that are currently on the active recall.
