Which Texas Counties Have The Most Tornadoes?
Besides the great food, good people, and amazing culture, Texas is also known unfortunately for its tornadoes.
The website Stacker.com used data from NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information to find out what counties in Texas have had the most tornadoes since 2000.
Is Tornado Alley Moving?
According to Stacker.com:
Research has shown that Tornado Alley is shifting due to warming temperatures fueled by climate change. In the future, the Southeast could become the region that receives the bulk of the country's tornadoes. It's a concerning trend as the South is more populated than the Great Plains and has a higher concentration of mobile homes than other parts of the country, making the storms potentially deadlier and costlier.
The spring and early summer months are often the busiest for tornado activity, with a slowdown in activity observed in the late summer months. In the fall, a second tornado season, on a smaller scale develops, primarily in the states along the Gulf Coast.
In this study, the Texas counties are ranked according to the number of tornadoes per 100 square miles because they can all differ in size. Counties with fewer than five tornadoes are not represented.
