Is it possible that we haven't always had mobile phones? It just doesn't seem possible, but even as recently as 1999, people on the streets were asked if they thought they needed a mobile phone, and the answer seems to be a resounding, "No."

The reasons are varied, but most of the people in the video just didn't seem to think that they needed to be accessible all the time. Many of the people interviewed felt that, if they had an answering machine, that's all they needed. Several thought that mobile phones were only for important people.

It's a fascinating look back some 17 years ago, especially when you consider that here in 2016, people feel lost without their electronic leash. Remember when we thought pagers interfered with our private lives?
