They Should Teach These Things in School

I've always thought that school should somehow prepare us for life, and, I guess in some regards it does, but there are so many things beyond the basic school subjects that we need to know about.

How many kids have you seen go all through school making great grades, but then that same student is pretty much helpless when it comes to handling everyday life? The student knows all about the Byzantine Empire and gets advanced calculus, but doesn't know how to balance a budget or change a tire.

There are so many things we have to know about, and there are no school courses that teach these valuable life lessons. I know that mom and dad ought to pass on these lessons, but that just doesn't seem to be happening.

From that article, here are 6 things that they should be teaching in school:

1.  Home Repairs -  You never know when you might have to be a plumber or carpenter at a moment's notice. It would be a good thing if students left school knowing how to do minor repairs like very basic plumbing and carpentry. Knowing how to make those basic repairs yourself can save you a fortune.

2.  Vehicle Upkeep -  Here's another skill you can need at a moment's notice. Everyone should know some basic car maintenance. At the very least, everyone should know how to jump start a car or fix a flat. Sooner or later, we all need to know some basic automotive skills.

3.  Budgeting - I could have certainly used some education in this department. I've never been good at budgeting anything in my life. Imagine knowing how to live on a budget when you get out of school instead of learning the hard way!

5.  Taxes - Believe it or not, I learned this one by trial and error. The capper to that story is that my mom made part of her living by figuring people's income taxes. She was darn good at it, too. She was so busy doing everyone's taxes that she forgot to teach me! I can't believe they don't teach something as important as that in school.
