Sulphur Mayor, Mike Danahay, said the Maplewood Bridge is 37 years old and has far exceeded its days of glory. Hazel Street to Post Oak Road will be open to local traffic only, but motorists can expect delays to their commute. Construction began today and the project is estimated to take roughly six months to complete. It's going to be worth the trouble in the long run, says Mayor Danahay.

The mayor explained a section of Maplewood Drive will ultimately be closed to replace the bridge. One of the best things coming out of the bridge replacement project is better drainage. Mayor Danahay says that the new concrete culverts with make a huge difference in restoring proper drainage in the area.

Until the job is complete, the mayor warned residents living along Maplewood Drive that they should leave early. Traffic is going to be heavy and slow moving at times. He urged drivers to take alternate routes to ensure they arrive to their destinations on time.

Though funding has been secured for the long overdue project, it's not exactly going to be cheap. Mayor Danahay said it will cost approximately $800,000."
