We are halfway through the high school regular season. This week marks the beginning of the second half of the season. For some teams, they will begin district play. For other teams, they will be fighting for the top spot in their district....District 3-5A to be exact.

When it comes to the standings in District 3-5A, there are only two remaining undefeated teams in district play that look to capitalize in what looks to be wild district title race. Those two teams will meet this Friday night as the Sulphur Golden Tors travel to the "Open-Air Cro Dome: to take on the Bears of Carencro.

Sulphur stumbled to an 0-2 start after falling 34-27 at Holy Cross. However, there was still a bit of hope in the minds of Sulphur fans. In that loss, Sulphur running back Derrick Guillory ran for a school record 340 yards. Since that game, Guillory has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark and is on pace for a 2,000 yard season. Since their loss at Holy Cross, Sulphur has won three consecutive games including two in district play (New Iberia and Sam Houston).

Carencro is having a comeback year. The Bears come into this game with four wins after only winning three game all of last season. With defeats to Barbe (35-21) and Comeaux (24-21) last week in overtime, Carencro has found themselves battling for the early lead in District 3-5A. Carencro has a running back in their own rights. Tyreik Campbell piled up 500 yards for the season before twisting his ankle in the second quarter of last weeks game. Backup Devin Senegal came in for Campbell and filled his shoes nicely coming two yards shy of a 100 yard game and adding a touchdown in the overtime win against Comeaux.

Sulphur will be relying on their workhorse Derrick Guillory. He has set his standards very high as of late averaging over 200 yards a game. As for Carencro, with Campbell in question for this weeks game, they are hoping that Senegal can have his 100 yard game this week, if not more. The winner takes control of District 3-5A for the time being, but other challenges will await both Sulphur and Carencro in the weeks to come.
