Southern Football Moves Season Kickoff To February 27
Football fans have been up in arms lately, as different conferences are deciding to forgo the fall season and opt not to play. The Big 10, PAC 12, SWAC, and most of the FCS conferences have all decided to not to play this fall.
The hope was to maybe play in the spring instead, and we found out one team out of the SWAC has announced they plan to play in the spring and have released their schedule.
Southern University football, based out of Baton Rouge, announced yesterday they plan to kick off their 2020 football season this spring in 2021.
The first game is set for February 27, 2021 against Alabama State. However, it will be a shortened schedule according to what they posted. So far, it looks like Southern will have six games on the schedule, with three open dates and one bye week.
The big game, as it is every year on Southern's schedule, is against Gramling, which is set for April 17, 2021. It is known as the Bayou Classic and it usually takes place in New Orleans in the Superdome.
It is unknown yet if the game will take place in New Orleans, but if all goes back to normal, it should.
The McNeese Cowboys and the Southland Conference announced last week that football this Fall was cancelled as well. Let's hope they follow suit with the SWAC and play in the Spring of 2021. We can only hope that will happen not only for Cowboy fans but for the student athletes of McNeese and the city of Lake Charles.
