James Gandolfini, who became famous overnight in his portrayal of Tony Soprano, died today in Italy at the age of 51.

Gandolfini was in Italy to attend the 59th Taormina Film Festival in Sicily -- and he was scheduled to participate in a festival event this weekend.

Sources say the cause of death is thought to be a heart attack.
