Restaurant Offers Discount to Customers Who Hand Over Their Cell Phones
In the past few years, it’s become increasingly common to see cellphones on restaurant tables alongside the standard napkin and silverware.
But one Los Angeles eatery wants to change all that — and playing along will save you money.
The owners of Eva, a European-styled restaurant that seats about 40 people, is offering a five percent discount to diners willing to check their phones at the door.
“For us, it’s really not about people disrupting other guests,” said owner/chef Mark Gold. “It’s about two people sitting together and just connecting, without the distraction of a phone, and we’re trying to create an ambiance where you come in and really enjoy the experience and the food and the company.”
Gold said it also gives customers a way to truly relax and converse with their dining companions in person (remember when we used to do that?).
Only about half of Eva’s guests have participated, but Gold is encouraged, adding, “I think once the server approaches the table and they’re presented with the offer, they like the idea of actually talking to each other again.”
