I have often heard that confining animals in spots where they can see everything but reach nothing will make them mean. Imagine yourself in the same situation. This is the case of a dog who really wants a stick. He is not willing to wait patiently until the branch becomes a stick; instead he is going to speed up the process. Why he wants it does not matter (though it is certainly puzzling.) I don't think I could have been there and not helped him out.
