The 2020 Olympic Boxing tryouts for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo got underway and continue today in the Lake Charles Civic Center. Day one was a flurry of upsets and jaw crunching knockdowns that set up interesting matches for today.

It was the 125 lb women's division that produced the first shocker when four seed Andrea Medina of San Diego, Ca., sent five seed Destiny Jasso of Dallas, crashing to the canvas with a hard left jab. Jasso shaken, tried to stand up but the referee stopped the bout. Said an excited Medina after the bout in discussing her knockout strategy: She kept leaving her hand down when I was coming with the hook. I noticed the weight shifting and that’s when I caught her. It’s so exciting. I’m happy to be here and I’m ready for the next round.

Two upsets followed as the ranks begin to thin in the tournament.

The biggest audience reactions came later in the men's 201+ lbs ranks. Top seed Luis Alvarado of Kenosha, WI., and eight seed Dacarree Scott out of San Antonio, Texas, steadily exchanged blows and provided plenty of leather action the entire fight before Alvarado took the unanimous decision. Alvarado noted he was warmed up and ready to go in the first round of this fight: The funny thing is that the first round is always the hardest for me because I have to get going. But this time it wasn’t that hard because we warmed up well. We got in there ready to go to war and he brought it, but I brought it right back.

The Olympic trials continue at the Civic Center through the championships on December 14 with the finals at the Golden Nugget on the 15th.
