For a 72-year-old Maurice resident, Thursday's storms were nothing compared to the "lightning strike" of good fortune he woke up to following Wednesday night's Powerball drawing. Melvin Ray Young matched five of the six numbers in the April 3rd drawing and that made his Powerball ticket worth a cool one million dollars.

Young didn't realize that he held a big money ticket until he checked his numbers early Thursday morning. He told KATC TV,

I’ve been playing Powerball for 10 or 15 years, but have never won nearly this much before. It was a nice surprise when I checked my ticket this morning and saw that I won a million dollars!

Okay, if we are being factual Young's ticket turned out to be only worth $710,000 after Uncle Sam and the State of Louisiana grabbed their share in taxes from his financial windfall.

So what do you do when you find out that you've suddenly got several hundred thousand dollars are your disposal? According to Mr. Young, he plans to pay off his house and purchase a new truck.

By the way, both the Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots are continuing to grow. Tonight's Mega Millions Jackpot is worth an estimated $104 million. The Powerball will be worth an estimated $68 million on Saturday.

If you choose to play, we hope you will choose to play responsibly and good luck.
