The Louisiana State Police announced they are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Lake Charles on July 29. The State Police Bureau of Investigations was requested by the Lake Charles Police Department (LCPD) to investigate the shooting incident because it involved their officers. According to LA State Police, the preliminary investigation revealed LCPD officers responded to an alleged carjacking in Lake Charles at about 8:30pm, near the intersection of Shattuck and O’Brien Street.

The suspect was identified as 37-year-old Winston Joseph Latour III. When officers located the vehicle, Mr. Latour reportedly fled. The pursuit ended when he crashed into a home in the 1000 block of 13th Street. According to LCPD, Mr. Latour had a firearm, but it's unclear if the he pointed the weapon at officers or tried to reach for it. The preliminary investigative report stated the officers shot Winston Latour.

The officer sustained no injuries. However, Latour was mortally wounded and was  pronounced dead at the scene. For now, there are no further details surrounding the shooting. The investigation is active and ongoing.
