Louisiana fishermen who love the fight and flavor of Red Snapper got some good news from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries on Monday, that department was adding an additional eight days to the recreational Red Snapper season.

Commissioner of LDWF Jack Montoucet signed the emergency declaration yesterday which will allow licensed fishermen in the state to pursue a daily limit of four fish per person. The adjustment to the Red Snapper season was made after wildlife officials had a chance to evaluate the current season and the number of fish that were harvested during that time.

You might recall, LDWF closed Red Snapper season on September 19th. This was a planned closure. LA Creel data from sportsmen and marinas indicated that fishermen in Louisiana waters harvested only 39,216 pounds of Red Snapper during the initial opening of fishing for the species.

That total, 39,216 pounds, is considerably less than the 809,315-pound quota state wildlife agents had placed on the 2022 season, hence the extra days for fishermen to go out and get some more.

The eight-day extension to the season will commence this Friday night October 7th at midnight. The extended season will remain open until 11:59 on October 14th. And again, the limit has been increased to four fish per person.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reminds all sportsmen that many activities such as fishing for Red Snapper require a license. Monies generated from the sales of these licenses go to preserve Louisiana's great fishing heritage as well as help the agency maintain and protect habitat for creatures on land and in the water.
