Louisiana Car Insurance Prices Are Out Of Control! A Parent’s Story
(KHLA - Lake Charles, Louisiana) - I always knew car insurance in Louisiana was a little high, but I didn’t understand just how crazy it could get, until I added my 18-year-old son to our policy.
He’s a responsible young man who just got his driver’s license. We’ve spent months teaching him safe driving habits and preparing him to be on the road. So, when I called our insurance company to add him, I expected the price to go up a little, but I didn’t expect what happened next.

Our monthly premium skyrocketed. I couldn’t believe how much more we were suddenly expected to pay. It felt like a penalty just for having a teenage driver in the house.
Thinking it had to be a mistake, I started calling around. I talked to several different insurance companies, hoping to find something more reasonable. Some quotes were a little better, but many were even worse. No matter where I looked, the prices were way higher than I expected.
Louisiana is already known for having some of the highest car insurance rates in the country. There are a lot of reasons, things like frequent accidents, storm damage, and even a high number of lawsuits. But that doesn’t make it any easier to swallow.
It feels like families are being punished for trying to help their teens grow up and become independent. We want them to gain experience and be safe drivers. But the cost of insuring them can make it almost impossible.

In the future, we will have to make some tough choices just to manage the cost. We raised our deductible and trimmed back a few extras to make the policy more affordable. But it still doesn’t feel right.
If you're a parent in Louisiana dealing with this, you're not alone. It shouldn’t be this hard to do something as simple as teaching your kid to drive. Something really needs to change, because right now, it’s just too much.
