When you browse through the grocery store, it would be odd not to see this iconic brand of bread on the shelves.

Evangeline Maid Bread is turning 100 years old in August. The company was originally opened as the Huval Baking Company by Joseph Huval in Youngsville, La on August 19, 1919.

Even though the bakery’s location, name, and ownership have changed over time, Louisiana folks have been eating and enjoying the classic bread for generations.

Fun fact for you: the 19‐year‐old daughter of the bakery’s owner, Mary Helen Huval, was the model for the logo of the bread that you see today.

What is staggering is that the bakery produces nearly 1.2 million pounds of bread along with hot dog and hamburger buns every week. Wow! That is unbelievable.

Being a Cajun, I remember as a kid getting the bread and making cereal out of it. We just broke apart slices of the bread, pouedr a little sugar and milk on it, and boom: a Cajun cereal. Other times, we'd grab a can of Steen's syrup, heat it up, then sop it up with the bread.

Oh, the memories!

In fact, we have a loaf of the bread in our house right now. Well, congrats to Evangeline Maid bread on 100 years and thanks for helping Louisiana families make so many memories.
